New Groundsman Seeks Perfect Pitch

New Groundsman Seeks Perfect Pitch

Rob Warner12 Mar 2014 - 17:48

Barnt Green CC appoint Damon Willets as Head Groundsman

The club extends a warm welcome to Damon, who takes up the Head Groundsman role very shortly.

Damon has been involved in cricket all his life. His late Father was a very fine club cricketer and when he was not doing his "proper job" as a bank manager, he also looked after the ground. So he's been sitting on mowers, tractors and rollers since the age of five.

However, it was Golf where he started his professional career and after four years at Warwickshire College of Agriculture, spent a total of seventeen years as a Greenkeeper at Halesowen Golf Club, ultimately as Deputy Head Course Manager.

In 2005 Damon returned to his cricket roots when he became the Head Groundsman at West Bromwich Dartmouth C.C. where he went on to enjoy seven very successful years winning many accolades. 2012 saw a move to Kidderminster Victoria to oversee Worcestershire County Cricket Club's main outground.

After a very successful season Damon moved to New Road as the Deputy Head Groundsman. Although having enjoyed a good year there, especially providing world class facilities for the Australian tourists, he couldn't resist the opportunity of being in charge of his own ground again. Damon said, "Barnt Green has always had the potential to be a great ground and I am excited about turning that potential into a reality."

In his spare time Damon is a semi professional Pianist and Organist and in the Winter months in particular he can be found all over Britain performing in concert.

The club would also like to extend their thanks to Gordon Hudson, for his stirling work over the years.

Gordon has been groundsman at the club since 1994,having been, initially, trained by his son Roger the then 1st team opening bat.

During the mid 1990's Gordon continued to build his practical expertise whilst gaining his academic qualifications up to the
maximum, level 3, with The Institute of Groundsmen.

Roger departed to work in Australia 14 years ago leaving Gordon to do an excellent job ever since.
His pitches have been acclaimed by The County 2nd XI's when we have hosted their fixtures at Barnt Green.
